Basic Prep

If you are calling about specific problems, please be prepared to describe them in as much detail as you can—it can mean hours and dollars saved. For example, "having trouble printing" could have numerous causes. But "I can't print in Microsoft Word" will speed diagnosis and resolution. To help us better serve you, please have the following information available:

1. Your specific Macintosh model. There are dozens. This information can be found under About this Computer/About this Mac, which is under the Apple Menu from within the Finder. (Knowing whether your iMac is 233 mHz or 400 mHz may not mean much much to you, but it can greatly help me prepare to help you.)

2. The version of Mac OS you're using (also under About this Computer)

3. The specific model number of any device (such as a printer) that's giving you trouble

4. Your type of Internet connection (broadband or dialup) and provider, and your email program.

5. In a hard disk failure, any prior unusual behavior you were experiencing

6. In a chronic problem, whether the issue appears to occur randomly, or during specific operations (and what those operations are)

7. Steps you may have already taken to correct the situation.

Important: Before house calls, please use your Mac system's "Software Update" feature to make sure you system software is up to date. In OS 9, go to the Apple Menu -> Control Panels -> Software Update. In OS X, click on System Preferences in the Dock, then click on Software Update. It will save you money!

Please also have patience—some problems can take many times longer simply to diagnose than other problems take to fix. We will try to provide an ongoing assessment of estimated time whenever possible.
